The University of Iowa began the fall 2022 semester Monday, which was preceded by the usual week of celebratory activities to welcome the newest class of Hawkeyes to campus.

The Class of 2026 moved into residence halls, participated in the Week of Welcome, and collectively shared their disappointment when Friday evening’s Kickoff at Kinnick was canceled at the last minute because of storms and lightning in the area.

Because forming the world’s largest block “I” for a photo on Duke Slater Field is a beloved tradition and cherished memory for incoming students, UI officials quickly pivoted and invited the Class of 2026 to form the “I” on the west lawn of the Pentacrest during convocation two days later.

Oh, what a sight it was. Could this be the start of a new tradition?

Check out these photos and a video below from the week’s events.
