Lew Montgomery, interim senior human resources director for University of Iowa Finance and Operations, was recently honored as a Big 10 Black Alumni of the Year representing the UI.
Montgomery received the award on July 30 during the Big 10 BANboree (Black Alumni Network) awards gala in Chicago. Each Big 10 school was encouraged to nominate an individual to represent their university. Nominees were selected by network of fellow members.
The Black Alumni awards are given in recognition of Black alums and pioneers from each Big 10 school who have made a significant and lasting impact in their professional field, outstanding service to their community, exhibiting a significant commitment to their community, or overcoming substantial obstacles in their personal life.
“I am very humbled to be the recipient of this award in its inaugural year. For me, this award recognizes so many equally deserving alumni of color who came before me who challenged the status quo in our history. I am grateful that my position has afforded me opportunities to contribute to the positive work being done at UI in diversity, equity, and inclusion, as we work to reshape the future for alumni of color on our campus,” Montgomery said.
Montgomery recently served as the interim associate athletics director for diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as the associate director of diversity, equity, and inclusion and employee experience for Finance and Operations. He transitioned into the interim senior HR director role for Finance and Operations on June 1.
