The positive impact of giving back was visible across the University of Iowa campus on Thursday, April 26, during Phil’s Day—an annual spring celebration of philanthropy, recognizing the gifts made by UI supporters.

For the seventh consecutive year, black and gold bows and signs stating “Phil Was Here” were tagged on buildings that have benefited from donations. UI faculty, staff, and students also signed thank-you postcards for donors and wore “I Am Phil” stickers to symbolize their connection to this cause.

Festivities were organized by the UI Center for Advancement—the university’s designated engagement and fundraising organization.

UI alumnus Mark Kaufman (86BS), the founder and CEO of Athletico, presented the “Life with Phil” talk in the Old Capitol Senate Chamber. Kaufman opened the first Athletico clinic in August 1991 and has since expanded the powerhouse provider of orthopedic rehabilitation services to more than 400 locations in 11 states.

Kaufman, who helped sustain the UI’s athletic training program through the Danny T. Foster Professorship in Athletic Training Education, spoke about how philanthropy shaped his life and career—and how easy it is to get involved.

“You don’t have to look hard to find something to get your arms around,” says Kaufman. “Define what gives you energy and what drives you.”
