The Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Board of Trustees named University of Iowa Executive Vice President and Provost Barry Butler president of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, effective March 13.

Our loss is clearly Embry-Riddle’s gain. Barry has been a central member of our university for decades and his service has impacted tens of thousands students, faculty, and staff.

Speaking personally, I will miss his counsel, wisdom, and friendship. He and his wife, Audrey, are exemplars of university citizenship.

Barry was appointed provost of the university in May of 2011 after serving as interim provost since October of 2010. Prior to his appointment, Butler was dean of the UI College of Engineering, where he holds the rank of full professor in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

We will immediately begin conversations with shared governance and academic leadership regarding next steps.
