Center designed for teachers and public health instructors to provide hands-on learning

WHAT: A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Center for the Advancement of Laboratory Science at the State Hygienic Lab at the University of Iowa. The center will provide a functioning laboratory where students can participate in experiments and learn about working science in a lab space.

The center is designed for teachers and public health instructors to provide hands-on learning.

Audio and video from the learning lab can be transmitted to the center's large auditorium so that those gathering in the auditorium can see and interact with those who are training in the lab.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Comments will be delivered at 10:15 a.m.

WHO: UI Executive Vice President and Provost P. Barry Butler, State Sen. Bob Dvorsky, State Rep. Dave Jacoby, and Coralville Mayor John Lundell will be in attendance.

UI President Sally Mason, UI College of Public Health Dean Sue Curry, Association of Public Health Laboratories Director Scott Becker, and Director of the New York State Food Laboratory Dan Rice will also comment via video message.

Regional students and teachers who have worked in the State Hygienic Laboratory and the new center will be available for media interviews.

WHERE: State Hygienic Laboratory, 2490 Crosspark Blvd., Coralville (at the southeast corner of Highway 965 and Oakdale Blvd.)
