University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City generates 8,233 jobs that have a $686 million impact on Iowa’s economy, according to the latest study by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA).

“We have long recognized that University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has an enormous beneficial effect on the economy of our entire state, not just Johnson County,” says Jean Robillard, UI vice president for medical affairs. “We are proud to serve Iowans from all walks of life and from all corners of the state.”

The economic impact becomes even more impressive when the overall effect of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic medical center is considered, according to an analysis by the firm of Tripp Umbach.

The UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City have a total employment impact of 32,598 people, support $277,075,329 in revenue for the state, and provide a total economic impact of $4.6 billion.

The IHA study found that Iowa hospitals directly employ 71,437 people and create another 57,792 jobs outside the hospital sector. As an income source, hospitals provide $4.2 billion in salaries and benefits and generate another $1.8 billion through other jobs that depend on hospitals.
