University of Iowa students participating in the Recreation and Sport Business track traveled to Chicago on Feb. 13 for an educational field trip.
More than 50 students took advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, provided by Dan Matheson, who is a lecturer within Health and Human Physiology and teaches sport business courses in the Recreation and Sport Business track. The field trip included stops at Red Frog Events, the Chicago Red Stars (a professional women's soccer team), DePaul University, and the Chicago Blackhawks.
Students were able to meet and receive advice from the likes of Chicago Blackhawks President John McDonough and DePaul's Senior Director of Development for Athletics Thad Dohrn, among others.
Matheson, who spent six years in the front office with the New York Yankees and nine years on the NCAA Enforcement Staff, routinely organizes field trips for his students to gain real-life experience in the sports world. Other trips include multi-week practicum courses with the San Diego Padres and Cedar Rapids Kernels over the summer, along with a newly-developed practicum with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Below is a social media timeline, provided by Matheson and his students, of the most recent trip to Chicago.
