Alan Huckleberry, associate professor in the University of Iowa School of Music, will make an audiovisual statement about human rights during the March 2 Piano Sundays concert at 1:30 p.m. in the Old Capitol Museum. The concert is free and open to the public.
Huckleberry and his students will perform “The People United Will Never Be Defeated!” A piano composition by Frederic Rzewski, it features variations of a Chilean workers’ song by the same name. Images themed around human rights issues will accompany the piece.
“The images, as well as the various performers, will help describe the compositional techniques of this piece,” Huckleberry says. “It is our hope that our audiovisual performance will be thought provoking on various levels.”
Huckleberry is recognized as a multi-faceted artist on the classical music scene. He has performed both in recitals, as a chamber musician and as a soloist with orchestras in Europe, Australia, South America, and North America. He can be heard on five compact disc records from Crystal Records, Albany Records, and MSR Classics. Huckleberry is equally passionate about his role as an educator and heads the UI’s piano pedagogy program.
Several of Huckleberry’s students will also perform: doctoral student William Whipple, masters student Elise Duvall, undergraduate students Austin Kendrick, and William Xie, and free-lance pianist Jason Sifford.
The UI School of Music is a unit of the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
