The University of Iowa Center for New Music, housed within the UI School of Music, will present the Center for New Music Ensemble featuring guest composer Anthony Cheung from the University of Chicago at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

The program will feature:

  • Abiogenesis by Brian Penkrot
  • Rebonds A pour percussion solo by Iannis Xenakis
  • Time’s Vestiges by Anthony Cheung
  • Vortex Temporum by Gérard Grisey

Cheung’s compositions have been performed internationally, and he has collaborated extensively with the Ensemble Modern, writing several works for the full ensemble as well as its soloists. His music has been programmed at international festivals such as Ultraschall (Berlin), CRESC. Biennale (Frankfurt), Wittener Tage (Germany), Nuova Consonanza (Rome), Musica Nova Helsinki (Finland), Centre Acanthes (France), Musica (France), the Tactus Young Composers Forum (Belgium), and Domaine Forget (Canada). Cheung was a recipient of the 2012-13 Rome Prize in Musical Composition, spending the year in residence at the American Academy in Rome.

The Center for New Music, a performance organization devoted to the late 20th and early 21st century repertoire, is the focus of contemporary composition and performance at the UI. The center embodies the institution's commitment to the vital role of the creative arts at the frontiers of human experience.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
