The performing arts component of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Project Art will present a concert of Middle Eastern and North African music by Salaam at noon Monday, Dec. 16, in the atrium of the John Colloton Pavilion at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The performance is free and open to the public.

Salaam has delighted audiences for years with its expansive repertoire of Middle Eastern and North African music. Salaam is true to the traditions, informing the uninitiated and evoking nostalgia in listeners who are familiar with the art form. The versatility of Salaam's musicians, who have deep knowledge of Eastern and Western styles, gives them the flexibility to move effortlessly between genres. Iraqi-American band leader Dena El Saffar's compositions take advantage her own eclectic musical upbringing to create a sound rooted in maqam (the modal system used throughout the Middle East), with tasteful forays into Latin, African, Balkan, rock, blues, and classical styles.

The performing arts component of Project Art was created to offer diversion and stimulation through music, dance, and theater. Project Art schedules numerous performances each year; many Project Art performances take place during the noon hour to attract staff and visitors during lunch breaks.
