University—

"Re-Creation: Musical Receptions of Classical Antiquity" an interdisciplinary conference that Classics and the School of Music hosted in the fall of 2011, has received the 2013 Outreach Award from the American Philological Association, the national Classics organization.

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education ( AASHE) recognized the UI Office of Sustainability as a 2013 awards finalist for a project that turned wood from dead and dying conifer trees at Kent Park near Iowa City into biomass fuel in the UI Main Power Plant.

The Office of Sustainability was honored at the AASHE Conference and Expo Oct. 6 in Nashville, Tenn. for a case study, “Saving Iowa’s Remaining Natural Jewels – an Ecological Restoration and Renewable Energy Partnership.” The objective of Kent Park Conifer Harvest Project was to learn about harvesting wood and using it as fuel in the power plant boilers, according to Ferman Milster, principle engineer-renewables in the Office of Sustainability.

Miller Logging from Dubuque, Iowa, harvested and chipped the wood in January 2013, and trucked it to coal supplier's River Trading facility near Muscatine, Iowa. River Trading blended the chips with coal and operators in the main power plant began co-firing the locally sourced wood chips in August.

The UI has set a goal to achieve 40 percent renewable energy as part of its 2020 Sustainability Vision.
