This story was updated at 3:29 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, to correct the location of the first stop on the governor's tour to the Bedell Entrepreneurship Learning Laboratory.

Student leaders will welcome Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds to the University of Iowa campus Thursday, Oct. 24 to tour the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center's Bedell Entrepreneurship Learning Laboratory (BELL) and the UI College of Pharmacy.

The visit coincides with the Iowa Board of Regents meeting in Iowa City, where Branstad is scheduled to make remarks earlier in the day Thursday.

The tour of the BELL, located at 322 N. Clinton St., is scheduled to begin at 2:45 p.m., and the College of Pharmacy tour at 4 p.m. Representing the student leadership will be Ben Gillig, president of the UI graduate and professional student body, and Katherine Valde, UI undergraduate student body president. Gillig and Valdeled a delegation of student leaders in a meeting with Branstad and Reynolds in July in Des Moines.

The BELL, part of the Tippie College of Business’ John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center, is a business incubator for entrepreneurial students pursuing the creation of a startup while attending the UI. Individual students and teams in the program receive a dedicated office space in the remodeled 10,000-square-foot facility, enabling them to concentrate on developing their business concepts.

More than half of all practicing pharmacists in Iowa are graduates of the UI College of Pharmacy, which has alumni practicing in 95 of Iowa’s 99 counties. The college boasts one of the select few High Throughput Screening facilities (drug discovery) in a college of pharmacy in the country. Additionally, it houses University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals, the most comprehensive university-based, FDA-registered drug manufacturing facility in the United States offering pre-clinical and commercial drug product services.

Brianne Bakken, a Humboldt, Iowa, native and pharmacy student scheduled to graduate with a PharmD. degree in May 2015, will lead the tour of the College of Pharmacy.
