Faculty—
Kerri Rupe, University of Iowa professor in the College of Nursing, has been appointed to the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee on Personal Protective Equipment (COPPE) for Workplace Safety and Health.
The committee’s role is to identify and direct future research, policy, standards and utilization of PPE. Personal protective equipment includes the following: hearing protection; respirators and masks; health surveillance programs; and a vast amount of other types of equipment, screening, and policies designed to keep the workers safe.
According to the IOM, the COPPE will provide a forum for discussion of scientific and technical issues relevant to the development, certification, deployment, and use of personal protective equipment, standards, and related systems to ensure workplace safety and health.

Teresa Mangum, director of the UI Obermann Center for Advanced Studies, has been invited to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Humanities Alliance.
As a member of the board of directors, Mangum will meet throughout the year with leaders of the American Council of Learned Societies, the Modern Language Association, the American Historical Association, the Association of Research Universities, the Association of American Universities, and other organizations and universities. Their goal will be to spread the word about the insights, cross-cultural understanding, wisdom, and compassion gained when people support the humanities.
Kristine Muñoz, professor of communication studies, will be awarded an honorary degree at the eighth Conferment of Degrees Ceremony from the University of Jyväskylä on Saturday, Aug. 24 in Jyväskylä Paviljonki. The faculties of the university will recognize distinguished persons for their achievements in social or scientific working life.
Leslie Flynn (Master of Science ’89), clinical assistant professor in the UI College of Education's Science Education Program, has been appointed to serve on a state task force to review the Next Generation Science Standards.
The new science standards represent a multi-state effort to develop a common set of learning expectations in science for students in kindergarten through high school.
Members of the Next Generation Science Standards Task Force will make a recommendation to the State Board of Education about whether the science standards should be adopted as part of the Iowa Core, the statewide academic standards in math, science, English/language arts, and social studies. Students—
Amanda Johnson, a graduate design student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was selected as one of 11 finalists in the Buckminster Fuller Institute's Dymax Redux contest out of a pool of over 300 entrants from 42 countries. Her design was also chosen as the favorite pick by guest critic Shoji Sadao-Dymaxion Map cartographer and architect.
The Dymaxion Map was created by Buckminster Fuller in the 1940s to accurately project the earth with no visible distortion to land masses, no political boundaries, and no western bias in its orientation. Johnson’s poster, In Deep Water, displays information regarding safe water availability around the world.
Johnson’s poster design will be on exhibit along with the other 10 finalists at an in-person exhibition at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City, scheduled for later this fall. Click here to read more about the Dymax Redux contest and view the finalists' designs.
