For generations, Cuba has been closed to American tourists. Now, travelers have a rare opportunity through the University of Iowa Alumni Association (UIAA) to experience the exotic landscapes and rich culture of Cuba firsthand—and to discover how this Caribbean country and the UI community share common passions for art, literature, dance, and music.
Iowa Voyagers, the UIAA’s travel program, will offer an exclusive trip to Cuba for UI alumni and friends Jan. 22-29, 2013. Operated in accordance with a special license issued by the U.S. Department of Treasury, the eight-day adventure is designed to promote cultural exchange and meaningful people-to-people interactions.
Participants will enjoy a customized itinerary that includes special visits and interactions with Cuban artists, poets, dancers, authors, and even artisan small-press operators who produce exquisite print editions of one-of-a-kind books. Accompanied by knowledgeable guides, the private group will explore the lively capital city of Havana and other charming provincial villages. Travelers will especially benefit from the expertise and personal knowledge of Cuban native and tour leader Adriana Méndez Rodenas, a UI professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Department of Spanish and Portuguese who specializes in Latin American, Cuban, and Caribbean literature.
Space is limited to 35 travelers. For more information or to book the trip, visit www.iowalum.com/voyagers/search/trip13.cfm?tripID=528 or contact the Iowa Voyagers office at 800-469-2586 or iowa-voyagers@uiowa.edu.
