The University of Iowa Pentacrest Museums will present the third concert in the 2012–13 Piano Sundays Series at 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 in the Old Capitol Museum Senate Chamber. The concert features "Iowa Rising Stars" — students from around the state who won awards at the 2012 Iowa Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) competition.
Piano Sundays at the Old Capitol Museum is supported by West Music, Coralville, and regularly features students and faculty from the Piano Area of the UI School of Music. This is the seventh season for the series.
“Iowa Rising Stars” includes pianists from high school to college age. The program includes music from Bach to 21st Century composers.
UI student Casey Rafn, who is studying with UI Professor Ksenia Nosikova, will perform Bach’s Toccata in D Major. Rafn made his orchestral debut in 2007 with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, playing Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, after winning that symphony orchestra's Young Artist Competition. He also won the 2011 Iowa MTNA Young Artist Piano Competition.
Elise Chang will perform "Num Kamm der Heiden Heiland" by J.S. Bach and Etude, Op.42, No.5 in C sharp minor by Alexander Scriabin.
Several other students from the competition and members of the MTNA will be performing.
