Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception from 5-7 p.m. on Nov. 2, at hotelVetro! For $5, indulge in light hors d’oeuvres and drink specials from Formosa, and celebrate the “Spirit of Drawing” with local fashion illustrator Julie Johnson.
Musical duo Main Sequence will electrify your senses throughout the evening. In addition, a DIY art station will be available for you to release your own “Spirit of Drawing.”
Julie Johnson is a local artist who has been a professional illustrator since 1982, although she says she has been an artist since age 2. Her work has appeared in hundreds of books, magazine publications, and ads. She has an international client list and numerous awards to her credit.
Her secret love is drawing portraits. She was recently commissioned by the Council of Fashion Designers of America to draw their roster of members, all well-known fashion designers. Johnson's work has been exhibited in galleries in San Francisco and New York City as well as in the personal collection of Oprah Winfrey—which is a portrait, of course.
Ambient. Psychedelic. Electr(on)ic. Improv. Four (or five) words that describe the music of The Main Sequence, a duo of Joel David Palmer on guitar and sound processing and Joshua Alan Weiner on analog and digital synthesis, guitar, and bass. The Main Sequence is sculpted sound, improvised on the spot; sometimes light and dreamy, sometimes heavy and labyrinthine; always adventurous, exciting, and unexpected.
UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend and mingle with other art enthusiasts for a great cause.
