Party for art at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at hotelVetro in downtown Iowa City. For $5, you’ll be able to indulge in hors d’oeuvres and drink specials, “get drawn in” to line drawings by West Branch artist Matt Niebuhr, and enjoy jazz piano by Henry Finch.

get drawn in line drawing

Niebuhr is an artist trained as an architect. His works explore an abstract notion of representation and question, "Do you see what I see?” His aspiration is to discover the image while making the drawing, embracing an outcome that cannot be known beforehand. More examples of his work can be seen on his website, www.mattniebuhr.com

Before moving to Iowa, Finch played blues and stride piano as a soloist in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and North Carolina. As a collaborator, he served as impresario and pianist to a biannual songwriters' concert series in Boone, N.C. He has self-produced five albums of original music, in which he sings, plays piano, ukulele, guitar, organ, saxophone, and percussion, and provides backing vocals. He is a recent graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop.

UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend and mingle with other art enthusiasts for a great cause. It’s also an opportunity to become a UIMA donor, which provides you with home delivery of the UIMA magazine and a special donor card that entitles you to admission to the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, which currently houses the UIMA collection, and more than 20 other art museums.

First Fridays are sponsored by Susie and Tom Bender, Susan and Sandy Boyd, and H. Dee and Myrene Hoover.
