If you are new to the Iowa City area and want to register to vote in Johnson County on Nov. 5, follow these easy steps.

1. Update your voter registration online 

If you have an Iowa driver’s license, you can register to vote online by using the form at the bottom of this webpage.

2. If you don’t have an Iowa driver’s license, register to vote by mail

If you are registered to vote in another state or don’t have an Iowa driver’s license and you want to vote in Johnson County on Nov. 5, you will need to fill out this form online, print it, sign it, and mail it to the Johnson County Auditor’s Office, 913 S. Dubuque St., Iowa City, IA 52240. You can also hand deliver it to the Johnson County Auditor’s Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

3. Register to vote on Election Day

You can register to vote on Election Day by going to the correct polling place for your current address. You can find local precinct and polling places on this interactive map or on this list.

If you do not have an Iowa driver’s license, you can use a current photo ID that contains an expiration date. Acceptable IDs include:

  • Iowa nonoperator ID
  • Out of state driver’s license or nonoperator ID
  • U.S. passport
  • U.S. military or Veteran ID
  • ID card issued by employer
  • Student ID issued by an Iowa high school or college
  • Tribal ID card/document

If your ID does not have your current address, you can use another document (paper or electronic) to prove where you live. It must contain your name and current address and be from the past 45 days. Acceptable proofs of residence include:

  • Residential lease
  • Utility bill or cellphone bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck
  • Government check or other government document
  • Property tax statement
