Amid an ongoing process to improve current campus safety systems as a result of recommendations by the Reimagining Campus Safety Committee, the University of Iowa is beginning its search for a new assistant vice president and director of UI Public Safety.
Senior President for Finance and Operations Rod Lehnertz has named Angie Reams, associate vice president and dean of students, to chair the committee.
“Our campus has made a lot of progress in a short amount of time, and this search process will be an extension of that forward movement,” says Reams. “I work closely with many of the members of the Reimagining Campus Safety Action Committee, and I look forward to being able to represent their views and recommendations while chairing the search committee for this important hire.”
Reams was named associate vice president and dean of students in October 2019 after serving in the position as interim since January 2019. Reams has held several positions at Iowa, including director of Student Care and Assistance, co-director of the Early Intervention Team, and serving as a member of the Threat Assessment Team.
Faculty, staff, and students joining Reams on the committee:
- Sara Sanders, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Faculty Senate representative
- Heather Mineart, past president, Staff Council
- Marco Oceguera, Undergraduate Student Government Academic Affairs Committee chair
- Walt Wang, Graduate and Professional Student Government vice president
- Marcus Wilson, executive senior associate athletics director, Intercollegiate Athletics
- Jennifer Miller, assistant director of Support Services for UI Hospitals & Clinics
- Teresa Kulper, director of UI Organizational Effectiveness and Organizational Development, University Human Resources
- David Kieft, university business manager
- Lew Montgomery, associate director of diversity, equity, and inclusion and employee experience, Finance and Operations
- Lori Berger, senior HR director, Finance and Operations
The new assistant vice president and director of UI Public Safety will succeed Scott Beckner, who retired in December 2020 after serving Iowa for four years. Lucy Wiederholt, who served as the associate director and chief of police since 2010, and Mark Bullock, who served as police captain since 2015, have been filling Beckner’s position as co-directors of the department on an interim basis since his departure.
