The University of Iowa has been named one of the top universities in the United States and the world in a new ranking by the Times of London’s higher education supplement.

The ranking placed the UI at 61st among the 172 U.S.-based colleges and universities, and in the 201-250 ranking among the 1,390 global institutions.

The Times Higher Education (THE) ranking, published Sept. 11 by the venerable British newspaper, analyzed more than 21,000 institutions worldwide and ranked the top 1,396. Of those, 172 are based in the United States.

The criteria used to determine the rankings were teaching, research, academic citations, international outlook, and knowledge transfer to business and industry.
