Ensemble praised for its intimate performances to play at Riverside Recital Hall
Wednesday, September 30, 2015

The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present the Brentano String Quartet on Oct. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Riverside Recital Hall (405 N. Riverside Drive) in Iowa City. The concert is a collaboration with the UI String Quartet Residency Program.

The quartet consists of violist Misha Amory, violinist Serena Canin, cellist Nina Lee, and violinist Mark Steinberg. Previously the quartet-in-residence at Princeton, the ensemble now holds the same position at Yale.

Critic Alex Ross calls the Brentano String Quartet “one of America’s finest, brainiest young quartets” while the New York Times notes that the quartet’s music making is “private, delicate, and fresh," and that "by its very intimacy and importance it seizes attention.”

The program will include fugues by J.S. Bach, Britten’s Quartet No. 3, and Brahms’s Quartet in B-Flat Major, Op. 67.

As part of the UI String Quartet Residency Program, the quartet will be in residence Oct. 12–17, participating in a variety of public events. Details about the residency can be found at uisqrp.wordpress.com.

This performance by the Brentano String Quartet is supported by the Hancher Partners and gifts to the Hancher Circle through the University of Iowa Foundation, with further support from the Ida Cordelia Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor Program.
