The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by the UI Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 30, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union.
The Symphony Orchestra, conducted by William LaRue Jones, director of orchestra studies in the UI School of Music, will perform the following selections:
- Pomp and Circumstance Military March, Op. 39, No. 1 by Edward Elgar
- Fantasia and Fugue, BWV 537, C minor by Johann S. Bach/Edward Elgar
- Macbeth, TrV 163, Op. 23 by Richard Strauss
- Concerto for Violoncello, Op. 85, E minor by Edward Elgar (Timothy Gill, cello)
The University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra has been hailed as one of the finest university orchestras in the United States. In addition, this organization is one of the leaders in the premiering and promoting of new literature.
Since 1997, Jones has been professor of music and director of orchestral studies and conductor of orchestras and opera at the UI. In 2011 he received the distinct honor of becoming a Collegiate Fellow in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His conducting schedule includes a wide array of professional, festival, collegiate, and student ensembles throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, ranging from the Minnesota Orchestra and the Minneapolis Pops to the Penang (Malaysia) Symphony, the Orquestra Sinfonica do Theatro da Paz (Belem, Brazil), the Antofagasta (Chile) Symphony, and the Symphony Orchestra of Lucerne (Switzerland).
Gill is principal cellist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Sinfonietta. He has also held the post of principal cellist with English National Opera.
The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
