Creative writing students from the Nonfiction Writing Program’s "The Art and Craft of Literary Immersion" course will share highlights from their work after spending a semester inhabiting and observing local spaces.
Readings will be held Saturday, May 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) at The Center, 28 S Linn Street, Room 202, in Iowa City; and Thursday, May 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room D. Receptions will follow both readings.
Students in this innovative class chose from a variety of locations in which to serve as “writers in residence,” including the Iowa City Senior Center, Macbride Raptor Project, Natural History Museum, Center for the Book, Winter Market, Department of Surgery, and Amana Colonies. With enthusiastic contacts at each location already in place, writers learned how to research, observe, interview, and document in a supportive environment.
As the semester progressed, students read works by immersion writers from venerated to form-bending, providing inspiration to shape their own material, culminating in essays based on the insight and information they collected.
Enjoy an evening of readings, conversation, and refreshments with student-writers as they share their immersion experiences.
