The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by the All-University String Orchestra and the UI Chamber Orchestra at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The All-University String Orchestra program will feature:

  • I Crisantemi by Giacomo Puccini (Sungzin Kim, conductor)
  • Scenes from The Emerald Isle, arranged by Carrie Lane Gruselle (Benjamin Nadel, conductor)
  • Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34 by Edvard Grieg (Chun-Ming Chen, conductor)
  • Sinfonietta fur Streichorchestra by Harald Genzmer (David Tedford, conductor)

The UI Chamber Orchestra will perform:

  • Concerto for Percussion and Small Orchestra, Op. 109 by Darius Milhaud (Andrew Thierauf, percussion; Chun-Ming Chen, conductor)
  • Un’aura amorosa from Cosi fan tutte ­­by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
  • Tarquinius Does Not Dare from The Rape of Lucretia by Benjamin Britten (James Judd, tenor; David Tedford, conductor)
  • Vocalise by Sergei Rachmaninoff
  • Signore, Ascolta from Turandot by Giacomo Puccini (Jessica Pray, soprano; Chun-Ming Chen, conductor)
  • Symphony No. 6, D.589 in C major by Franz Schubert (Sungzin Kim and Benjamin Nadel, conductors)

The All-University String Orchestra is designed specifically for non-music majors who wish to continue playing their string instrument while studying at the university. This unique experience includes students from diverse academic pursuits throughout the university.

The Chamber Orchestra, designed for graduate students, is based around the ensemble format established during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its repertoire covers a broad range from Classical and early Romantic composers to contemporary.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
