Iowa Percussion, housed within the University of Iowa School of Music, will present “Premieres and Other Firsts” at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 30, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature marimba soloist Andy Harnsberger, dulcimer soloist Matthew Coley, and composer Steven Simpson as guest artists.
The program will feature:
- Spherical Music by Eve Beglarian
- Ritmica VI and Ritmica V by Amadeo Roldán y Gardes
- Quartet No. 1 by Tyler Swick, UI graduate student (premiere performance)
- Palmetto Moon by Andy Harnsberger (Andy Harnsberger, solo marimba)
- Basic Geometry by Josh Gottry (premiere performance)
- Images of Africa by Steven Simpson (premiere performance; Matthew Coley, solo dulcimer)
- Grand Ambulation of the Bb Zombies by John Bergamo
The award-winning percussion program at the UI has a legacy spanning more than 50 years of performance and educational excellence, and innovation and leadership in the field of percussion. Among the oldest university-based percussion programs, Iowa Percussion was established in 1958 by professor Thomas L. Davis, who led the program until 1996, when Dan Moore became the second professor of percussion.
The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
