The University of Iowa String Quartet Residency Program—coordinated by violist Elizabeth Oakes, lecturer in the UI School of Music—will welcome the Daedalus Quartet on campus Nov. 11-18, with the residency focusing on the theme of “music from exile.”
The quartet’s residency will feature master classes, public presentations on the entrepreneurial side of a chamber music career, and numerous opportunities for UI School of Music students to work one-on-one with the guests. These events are also part of the Division of Performing Arts’ Series on Arts and Rights.
In “Music from Exile,” an event scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Agudus Achim Synagogue (401 Oakdale Blvd., Coralville), the Daedalus Quartet will be joined by UI faculty historian Lisa Heineman for an exploration of the works and circumstances of several composers forced into various forms of exile due to the cultural policies of the Third Reich. From those who were arrested and never completed the journey to exile, to those who spent the war far from home, and those who experienced internal exile by remaining within a state to which they were vocally opposed, the effect on the music produced is profound.
And at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, the Daedalus will participate in “Exile and the Arts: International Perspectives,” a performance and roundtable discussion in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall. The event, moderated by Luis Martín-Estudillo, co-director of the European Studies Group at the UI, will also include Horatio Castellanos-Moya, writer and professor, UI Department of Spanish and Portuguese; artist Félix de la Concha; and Alexander Somek, Charles E. Floete Chair in Law at the UI.
The Daedalus will give a public recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus. The program is as follows:
- Erwin Schulhoff: Five Pieces for String Quartet (1923)
- Mieczslaw Weinberg: String Quartet No. 8 in C minor, Op 66 (1959)
- Viktor Ullmann: Third String Quartet, Op. 46 (1943)
- Erich Wolfgang Korngold: String Quartet. No. 3 in D major, Op. 34 (1945)
