The UI Latin Jazz Ensemble will perform Oct. 24 at the Mill.

The UI World Beat Ensemble will perform at 6 p.m., playing music from New Orleans, Afro Pop from Nigeria, blues, South African folk, and Brazilian Samba. The Latin Jazz Ensemble starts around 7 p.m., playing Latin jazz music.

“Attendees will likely feel the desire to dance throughout the performance; that is strongly encouraged,” says James Dreier, jazz studies lecturer and director of both bands.

Dreier, a former member of Latin jazz group "Orquesta Alto Maiz,” is a drumset, Latin percussion, and jazz educator, clinician, and performer. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Arts degree in music theory from the University of Iowa. He has studied with master drummers including Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez, Jesus Alfonso, Jose Amat, Giovani Hildalgo, Pascoal Meirelles, Michael Spiro, Joe Hunt, and Alan Dawson.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
