Kelcey Parker will read from Liliane’s Balcony, a novella set at Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, in a free reading at Prairie Lights Books in downtown Iowa City. The reading also will be streamed live on the University of Iowa Writing University website.
Fallingwater, built for Pittsburgh merchants E.J. and Liliane Kaufmann in 1935, is as much a character as it is a setting. One September night in 1952, Liliane Kaufmann—tired of her husband's infidelities—overdoses on pain pills in her bedroom. Liliane’s Balcony alternates Mrs. Kaufmann's mostly true story with the fictional narratives of four modern-day tourists.
Parker is the author of For Sale By Owner, winner of the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Award in Short Fiction. Her stories have appeared in Notre Dame Review, Bellingham Review, Santa Monica Review, Indiana Review, Third Coast, and Redivider. She currently directs the creative writing program at Indiana University–South Bend.
