The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free recital by UI professor of piano Réne Lecuona and guest artist (and former School of Music lecturer) Hannah Holman at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The program will feature:

  • Sonata for Piano and Violoncello, op. 40 by Léon Boëllmann
  • Andante grave: Moderato animato from Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, op. 119 by Sergei Prokofiev
  • Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in A minor, op. 33 by Camille Saint-Saëns
  • Sonata for Cello and Piano by Frank Bridge

Lecuona has performed throughout South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the United States. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall with mezzo-soprano Katherine Eberle and in the Goodman Hall at Lincoln Center with soprano Rachel Joselson. Lecuona earned a doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance and was awarded a performer’s certificate at the Eastman School of Music. She received undergraduate and master's degrees at the Indiana University School of Music. Her playing has been featured on many compact discs, including Bernhard Romberg: The Complete Cello Sonatas, which she recorded with Holman.

Holman, a founding member of the Maia Quartet, the University of Iowa’s former quartet-in-residence, is a cellist with the New York City Ballet Orchestra. Her career has encompassed orchestral and chamber music, solo performances, and teaching. In addition to her work with the New York City Ballet Orchestra, which she joined at the beginning of the 2012-2013 season, Holman is the principal cellist of the Quad City Symphony, a position she has held since 2008. She began her professional career in England playing with the English String Orchestra under Yehudi Menuhin and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under Simon Rattle. Her orchestral work also includes serving as assistant principal cello with the Michigan Chamber Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony, and the American Sinfonietta.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
