The University of Iowa Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders will sponsor a reading club for people with mild to moderate aphasia. The club will convene Tuesday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center beginning Sept. 3 and concluding Nov. 19.

No prior registration is required. A donation of $5 per week or $60 per semester is suggested. People of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

Participants will have the opportunity to improve reading comprehension with the support of peers and clinical care workers. Books and reading strategies will be chosen according to the needs of individual attendees.

Aphasia is a language impairment resulting from injury to the brain that affects a person’s ability to produce or comprehend speech and the written word. More than one million people in the United States have been diagnosed with aphasia.
