The University of Iowa School of Music will present a faculty recital by Amy Schendel, assistant professor of trumpet, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, will also feature Elaina Burns on piano and Todd Schendel on trombone.

Amy Schendel currently plays with the Iowa Brass Quintet, Contrapunctus Brass Trio, and teaches trumpet at the UI. Recent performances include the premiere of Wayne Lu’s Partita for Brass Trio, commissioned by the Contrapunctus Brass Trio, at the 2013 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Additional performances include the 2012 International Horn Symposium, 2012 International Trumpet Guild Conference, 2012 International Women’s Brass Conference, and the 2012 Iowa Band Master’s Association Conference. Her first solo and chamber music recording, Full Power, released in 2010, features Abe Lincoln’s Song Book, written by Douglas Hill for the Contrapunctus Brass Trio with narration.

Burns is a pianist, organist, teacher, and adjudicator serving as an adjunct faculty member at Clarke University and the University of Dubuque. An active chamber musician, she collaborates frequently with faculty, students, and ensembles in the tri-state area. With her private students and with faculty members from several local colleges and universities, she founded the annual Celebration of Chamber Music held at Clarke University. In addition to her work with small ensembles, she will be the accompanist for the Clarke Collegiate Singers beginning in the fall of 2013.

Trombonist Todd Schendel’s performance experience includes positions with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Spoleto Festival Orchestra U.S.A., Contrapunctus Brass Trio, and playing extra and substitute for the National Repertory Orchestra, Madison Symphony, Orchestra Iowa, Quad Cities Symphony, and the Minnesota Orchestra. Adept in commercial settings, he has performed with Doc Severinsen, Art Garfunkel, John McDermott, Bobby Vinton, Riders in the Sky, Wayne Newton, and Solomon Douglas Swingtet.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
