The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy announces several new leadership changes.

While UI College of Pharmacy Dean Donald Letendre is spearheading legislative advocacy and philanthropic efforts surrounding the comprehensive campaign and future facility, Bernard Sorofman will focus his efforts exclusively on executive associate dean responsibilities. These duties include faculty development, strategic planning, and program and project management.

Jay Currie, former head of the UI College of Pharmacy Division of Applied Clinical Sciences, was named chair of the Pharmacy Practice and Science Department. Gary Milavetz will replace Currie as division head of Applied Clinical Sciences.

Larry Fleckenstein has been named interim chair of the newly-created Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics Department, which unites the college’s basic science divisions. Fleckenstein is leading the department during the search for a permanent department chair.

In recent years the college has considered the establishment of undergraduate programs that play to its strengths and offer new opportunities to students. Maureen Donovan has been named the UI College of Pharmacy associate dean for undergraduate education, a newly-created position. In this role, Donovan is focusing her energies on bringing these undergraduate programs to fruition. Ali Salem has taken over Donovan’s duties as head of the Division of Pharmaceutics and Translational Therapeutics.

Amber Seaton has been named the UI College of Pharmacy chief of staff. Seaton will continue financial management while also promoting greater collegiate consistency and efficiency through operational effectiveness initiatives. She will oversee staffing in the college and work across units to establish a more effective operational structure.

“These leadership changes will help keep us moving steadily toward our objective of sustaining a world-renowned college of pharmacy—innovative and robust in our teachings and discoveries," Letendre says. "Our new leaders will help us to strengthen our strategic planning, streamline workflow, increase efficiency, and realize our goals in building a new facility."
