Joseph A. Brennan, associate vice president for university communications at the State University of New York at Buffalo, will visit the University of Iowa campus Monday, July 15, as the second of three finalists for the UI vice president for strategic communication position.

Brennan will take part in a public forum from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in 2520D University Capitol Centre.

Jeff Iseminger, interim vice president for university advancement and marketing at Minnesota State University in Mankato, visited campus July 11. The third finalist is scheduled to visit campus July 17 and will be named a day before the visit.

The UI position has been filled on an interim basis by Mark Braun, UI President Sally Mason’s chief of staff, since Tysen Kendig left the position in December.

Brennan has been in his current role since 2008, serving as the chief communication officer for the 29,000-student research university, leading the school’s communication strategy, policy, and planning. He manages a 32-person team, oversees a $2.5 million annual budget, and convenes a “communicators network” of more than 150 staff across campus.

From 2006 to 2008, he was executive director of communications and marketing at Ohio University, executive director of marketing and university relations at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., from 2003 to 2006, and executive director of public relations and marketing at the University of Toledo in Ohio from 2000 to 2003.

He holds a Ph.D. in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo, an M.B.A. in marketing from the University of the Pacific, and a B.A. in English and psychology from Wayne State University.

Tom Rocklin, vice president for student life, and Richard Fumerton, a professor of philosophy and past president of the Faculty Senate, are chairing the search for the UI position.
