Sandra McGee, visiting clinical assistant professor in the UI School of Social Work, has been named 2012 Social Worker of the Year by the Iowa Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.
Sara Sanders, associate professor in the UI School of Social Work, was honored as an Emerging Leader in Professional Practice by the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network in March. The award is in recognition of her leadership and commitment to outstanding teaching and research in the field of aging and end-of-life care.
Susan Murty, associate professor in the UI School of Social Work, was recognized for Excellence in Professional Education by the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network in March, highlighting her outstanding leadership and commitment to providing quality end-of-life care to marginalized and underserved populations, such as older adults, rural families, and Hispanic families.
John Warren, professor in the UI Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, has been elected to the American Board of Dental Public Health Board of Directors, effective April 22. He will serve a six-year term, and during the last year, he will become president of the board.
Christina Bohannan, professor in the UI College of Law, has been named the recipient of the 2013 Mark T. Banner Award for distinction in intellectual property law by the American Bar Association. Bohannan is the youngest person to receive the award, and the first academic.
Stephanie Jones-Rogers, assistant professor in the UI Departments of History and Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was awarded the Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Newcomb College Institute of Tulane University for the 2013-14 academic year. The award is presented to a scholar whose research takes an intersectional approach to gender, reflecting how race, class, sexuality, ethnic, community and national identities shape law and, in turn, how law shapes those identifies.
David Perlmutter, professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has received the 2013 Classical Association of the Middle West and South ( CAMWS) Special Service Award. The award goes to classicists or non-classicists who have made special contributions to the promotion of Latin and classical studies, especially at the state and local level, in CAMWS territory.
Betsy A. Stone, assistant professor, and Len R. MacGillivray, professor, in the UI Department of Chemistry have been awarded a $3,000 grant to help public audiences better understand the science behind climate change.
The local section will establish a team of climate change science experts to communicate with the public. The team will also provide guidance to high school and college students who will develop demonstration activities to present at outreach events such as county fairs and farmers’ markets.
The announcement was made at the society’s recent national meeting in New Orleans.

Emily Duncan, a student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has been selected by international competitive audition as a winner of the National Flute Association Master Class Performers Competition. Duncan, a student of Professor Nicole Esposito, was one of only six students selected as winners of this competition, and will perform at the 2013 National Flute Association Convention in New Orleans.
The National Flute Association, founded in 1972, is the largest flute organization in the world. Approximately 6,000 members from more than 50 countries join together in person, online, at conventions, informally, and in forums, through publications and classrooms, in performance, in friendship. and collegiality. Guided by its goals to encourage a higher standard of artistic excellence for the flute, its performers, and its literature, members include leading soloists, orchestral players, jazz, and world music performers, teachers, adult amateurs, and students of all ages.
Aaron Scherer, a student in the UI Graduate College, has received the Sandra H. Barkan Outstanding Graduate Student Mentor Award. This award is given to graduate students who show exceptional mentorship of undergraduates and junior graduate students. The award was given on Saturday, March 6 at the James F. Jakobsen Graduate Student Conference awards ceremony.
Five UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences students received Public Anthropology Awards from the Center for a Public Anthropology. The students participated in a North American competition involving over 3,500 students from 24 schools. UI award winners are Katelyn Meyer, Andrew Mullinnix, Abram Nothnagle, Alicia Filloon, and Ryan Kauffman.
Joel Sharbrough, a UI graduate student working in the laboratory of Maurine Neiman, assistant professor of biology, recently won a two-year, $20,000 National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant to extend his research.
The project will compare sexual and asexual specimens of a New Zealand freshwater snail to determine whether the accelerated accumulation of harmful mutations experienced by the asexual lineage can help explain why most organisms reproduce sexually, rather than asexually.
One of the first investigations of its kind, the research will include data collection by more than 100 high school students, thereby enabling the students to engage in a scientific project addressing a central question of evolutionary biology. The research is also of direct relevance to the many biologists and medical researchers who study the links between mutations and organismal function, including those who focus on the causes of human disease.

Dennis Tsz Kiu Kwok and Calvin Wong , students in the UI School of Music, are among the winners in the 2013 Yahama Young Performing Artists national competition.
Kwok, a sophomore saxophone student, received top honors at the competition. Wong, a junior, received an honorable mention. Both are students of Professor Kenneth Tse, himself a winner of the competition in 1994.
The Yamaha Young Performing Artists Program recognizes outstanding young musicians from the world of classical, jazz, and contemporary music. Winners are invited to attend and perform at an all-expenses-paid weekend awards ceremony at the Music for All Summer Symposium in Muncie, Ind.

The UI College of Engineering has announced that the student business plan for a company named "Iowa Smart Switch" is the winner of its 2012-13 Hubert E. Storer Engineering Student Entrepreneurial Start-up Award.
The company plans to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by developing high technology devices. These devices include an intelligent switch that can recognize a range of inputs from hospital patients with physical communication disabilities,and enables these patients to better communicate and experience a greater quality of care.
Iowa Smart Switch personnel include: Blake Martinson, a senior UI mechanical engineering student; Ben Berkowitz, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering; Zihan Zhu, a senior UI biomedical engineering student; Vince Hahn, an Master of Business Administration student at the UI Henry B. Tippie School of Management; and company mentor Professor Richard Hurtig of the UI Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
The annual award, established in 2002 and funded by an endowed gift from College of Engineering alumnus Hubert E. Storer, currently provides $10,000 of initial financial support for a College of Engineering student technological business plan.

Gregory T. Densen (JD and MBA, 1998) has been elected Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Densen joins Sherman & Howard attorney Douglas Cain as two of only 58 Colorado attorneys who have received this distinction.
Densen is a member of the Denver Estate Planning Council and Rocky Mountain Estate Planning Council. He also serves as an executive council member of the Colorado Bar Association Trust and Estate Section. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Washington University in 1994. He is currently listed in Best Lawyers in America for Trusts and Estates.
Hamlett Dobbins (MFA 1999, painting and drawing) has been awarded a prestigious American Academy in Rome Prize for the 2013-14 year.
Each year, the Rome Prize is awarded to 30 emerging artists and scholars in the early or middle stages of their careers who represent the highest standard of excellence in the arts and humanities. Dobbins, director of the Clough-Hanson Gallery at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., received the Jules Guerin Rome Prize in the visual arts category.
Winners of the 2013-14 Rome Prizes are provided with a fellowship that includes a stipend, a study or studio, and room and board for a period of six months to two years in Rome.
Justin Bedi (BBA 2008) received the Top Employee Volunteer Award from Exelon Energy for his volunteer work with Open Heart Magic. Bedi, a staff auditor at Exelon, performs bedside magic routines at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and serves on the board of Open Heart Magic, which will receive $20,000 from Exelon.
