As part of Iowa City’s first carnaval celebration this summer, the University of Iowa Museum of Art will present two spring-time talks by carnaval designers. The first is by architect and interior designer Jaime Cezário. His free, public lecture will be held in the Old Capitol Museum Senate Chamber from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, March 25.

The second talk, by Clary Salandy, will be presented Wednesday, April 24, also at the Old Capitol.

Cezário is one of the most famous Brazilian Carnavalescos in Rio de Janeiro. He has been an award-winning designer, internationally recognized for his work as an avid carnaval researcher, professor, and contributor for many carnaval magazines and newspapers in Brazil.

Since 2008 he has been working with UI Armando Duarte, professor of dance in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as a collaborator for the Brazilian Carnaval, music, dance, design, and street performance course through Study Abroad in International Programs. Cezário has been the main carnaval host for UI students who have visited Rio de Janeiro. In addition, in 2010 he received an invitation from the UI to give a series of lectures on the subject of carnaval in Brazil and the Schools of Samba of Rio de Janeiro.
