Award supports innovative community engagement projects

The University of Iowa’s Hancher has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP), in partnership with MetLife Foundation. The “All-In: Re-Imagining Community Participation” grant supports Hancher’s collaborative efforts with Iowa City’s Working Group Theatre.

Hancher is partnering with Working Group Theatre on an ambitious and wide-reaching project that engages the elderly population of Iowa City, their caregivers, and the organizations that serve them. The interactions and stories collected via this effort will underpin The Broken Chord, a new play that Hancher and Working Group Theatre will present at the Englert Theatre Friday through Sunday, April 12-14.

Hancher is one of six recipients of the All-In grant from across the nation. Other recipients include the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, Dancing in the Streets in the Bronx, The Foundry Theater in New York City, Millersville University in Pennsylvania, and the Network of Ensemble Theaters. The six grantees were selected from a highly competitive pool of more than 60 applicants who proposed cutting-edge plans to increase local community participation in the arts.

In addition to the All-In: Re-imaging Community Participation Program, The Broken Chord is supported by the Englert Theatre, Oaknoll Retirement Residence, and the F. Wendell Miller Fund.
