Offices and Awards

Faculty—
Downing Thomas, dean of International Programs and professor in the department of French and Italian in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, received the International Education Leadership award from the Chinese Association of Iowa. The award was presented at the Chinese Association of Iowa's 25th anniversary celebration and ceremony on Feb. 25. See related story.

Deborah Dawson, Dows Research Institute, has been appointed by the National Institute on Aging to serve on the Monitoring Board of the NIA-supported Longevity Consortium.

Elizabeth Altmaier, professor in the Department of Psychological and Quantitative Foundations in the College of Education, has been elected treasurer of the Iowa Psychological Association. She will serve in the position through 2015.

William Ming Liu, professor of Counseling Psychology in the College of Education, was ranked in Psychology Reports: Mental & Physical Health as the sixth most-cited multicultural scholar. The article is titled, “Legends of the Field: Influential Scholars in Multicultural Counseling.” Liu is also the associate editor of the journal, Psychology of Men and Masculinity.

Marianne Smith, assistant professor in the College of Nursing, has been selected by the Midwest Nursing Research Society to receive the 2013 Harriet H. Werley New Investigator Award.

Thomas M. Keegan, lecturer in the Department of Rhetoric in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was selected for the Lane Davis Award for Honors Team-Teaching for 2012-13. The award is in recognition of the Honors First-Year Seminar course "Drugs and Television: The Rhetoric of the Wire."

Matt Gilchrist, lecturer in the Department of Rhetoric in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was selected for the Lane Davis Award for Honors Team-Teaching for 2012-13. The award is in recognition of the Honors First-Year Seminar course "Drugs and Television: The Rhetoric of the Wire."

The following are 2013-2014 recipients of the Social Sciences Funding Program. The awards are designed to support seed funding to develop pilot data and to conduct preliminary work that will enable UI researchers to submit competitive applications for external research grants and/or supports new directions in scholarly/creative activity.

Staff—
Renee Houser, associate registrar in the Office of the Registrar, was recognized as a Patriotic Employer by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Jan. 25. This award recognizes deserving employers whose support and goodwill are critically important to retaining the highly skilled and qualified members of the Iowa Guard and Reserve.

Students—
Hubbard Group members Judge Brooks, (sophomore), Calumet City, Ill.; Alex Malloy, sophomore from Sioux City; and Justin Roberson, sophomore from Chicago, have been awarded the 2013 Rising Leaders Fellowship. Ann Duhamel, graduate student in piano performance and pedagogy, will be awarded the Music Teachers National Association Piano Technicians Guild Continuing Education/Performance Study scholarship in March.

Leslie Santos, doctoral student in the College of Education’s Rehabilitation Counselor Education program, has been selected by the National Council on Rehabilitation Education to serve as national student representative. Santos was selected for the vital role she played in promoting rehabilitation education by providing a voice that empowered the community. She will complete her two-year term in April.

Alumna—
Houston-Becky Foster Crane, who received a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1972, has received the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women’s Carolyn Helman Lichtenberg Crest Award in honor of her community service.

Publications
John Mikelson
and Amanda Irish were recently published in a handbook titled Called to Serve: A Handbook on Student Veterans and Higher Education. Mikelson is coordinator of the UI Veterans Center and a graduate of the UI College of Education with a master's degree in higher education. Mikelson and Kevin P. Saunders from Drake University authored a chapter on Enrollment, Transfers, and Degree Completion for Veterans. Irish, who wrote a vignette for the book, is a former president of the UI Veterans Association and a human physiology/pre-medicine major in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences who also has a Master's in Public Health from the UI College of Public Health.
