The University of Iowa School of Music will present the 2013 University of Iowa Orchestra Invitational Gala Concert, performed by the UI Chamber Orchestra and School of Music faculty, at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in Riverside Recital Hall on the UI campus.
The concert is free and the public is welcome.
The concert program is as follows:
- Capriccio No. 2 for Solo Double Bass by David Anderson, performed by Associate Professor Volkan Orhon (double bass)
- Sonata No. 3 “Ballade” by Eugene Ysaÿe, performed by Associate Professor Katherine Wolfe (violin)
- Hungarian Rhapsody by David Popper, performed by Associate Professor Anthony Arnone (cello) and graduate student Grethe Nöthling, piano
- Divertimento for Violin and Viola, op. 9, No. 3 by Hans Gál, performed by Associate Professor Scott Conklin (violin) and Professor Christine Rutledge (viola)
- Symphony in D Major by Luigi Cherubini, performed by the Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Chun-Ming Chen
The UI Chamber Orchestra, designed for graduate students, is based around the ensemble format established during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Its repertoire covers a broad range from Classical and early Romantic to contemporary composers. The Chamber Orchestra presents two or more concerts each semester.
The Orchestral Invitational, which continues through Saturday, Feb. 23, provides a unique performance and educational opportunity for high school and youth orchestras. Each orchestra will perform and receive written critiques and post-performance clinics from esteemed guest conductors. Additionally, master classes with the renowned UI instrumental faculty are part of the festival experience.
