The University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) and School of Art and Art History (SAAH) will host Midwest Matrix, a free weekend-long tribute to mid-20th century fine art printmaking on Saturday, Dec. 1 and Sunday, Dec. 2.
Co-organized by the UIMA and SAAH, the event features a symposium, film world premiere, exhibitions, Iowa Print Fair, and more. Events will take place at Art Building West and the Studio Arts Building, in addition to a reception at Lasansky Gallery and Studio.
The Midwest Matrix symposium will include a keynote lecture by Rudy Pozzatti, emeritus professor of art at Indiana University and a panel discussion with Joni Kinsey, UI professor of art history; Kathleen Edwards, chief curator at the UIMA; Stephen Goddard, senior curator of prints and drawings at the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas; and JoAnn Moser, senior curator of prints at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The documentary film Midwest Matrix, directed by Susan Goldman and narrated by radio journalist Susan Stamberg, will premiere at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, in Room 240 of Art Building West.
The Iowa Print Fair, held in the Studio Arts Building lobby on Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will include seven art dealers from all over the United States, selling fine art prints from the 17th century to the present, by such artists as George Bellows, Elizabeth Catlett, Tara Donovan, Stanley William Hayter, Ando Hiroshige, Camille Pissarro, and Grant Wood.
UI printmaking graduate student and visiting artist exhibitions and projects will also be on view in the Studio Arts building on Dec. 2.
