A gift in the amount of $175,000 to the University of Iowa Foundation has created a new scholarship opportunity for Charles City High School students who will be attending the UI.

The gift from Tye G. and Cathy M. Darland has established an endowed fund within the UI Foundation to support the Tye and Cathy Darland Scholarship.

The scholarship, which is for full tuition, is awarded to a student from Charles City who plans to attend the UI upon graduation. Funds from the scholarship are renewable to the recipient for up to three additional years as long as a minimum grade point average is maintained.

Emily Miller, who graduated from Charles City High School in 2012, has been awarded the first Tye and Cathy Darland Scholarship. Miller is currently in her freshman year at the UI.

Tye and Cathy Darland were raised in Charles City, and are 1982 graduates of Charles City High School. Tye Darland is the son of former Charles City resident Gary Darland and the late Susie Darland. Cathy Darland is the daughter of Charles City resident Walter David and the late Ethel David.

The Darlands each received their bachelor of business administration degrees in 1986 from the UI, and Tye earned his juris doctorate degree from the UI in 1989. The Darlands currently reside in Atlanta, Georgia.
