The Women’s Chorale and Camerata of the University of Iowa School of Music will share a free concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the Riverside Recital Hall.
The Women’s Chorale program, ranging from the medieval to the modern, explores the call to music-making, the joys of spring, devotion, and leave-taking.
Under conductors John Patrick Rakes and Peter Grua, with accompanist Michael Schnack, the selections include works by Purcell, Willcocks, Hildegard von Bingen, Felix Mendelssohn, John Rutter, Benjamin Britten, and Malcolm Dalglish.
For the performance of Hildegard von Bingen’s chant in praise of the Virgin Mary, Rakes will play a medieval instrument called the symphonie, a relative of the hurdy-gurdy.
The Camerata is a mixed vocal ensemble combining UI students and singers from the community. The choir will perform Johann Michael Haydn’s Five Sacred Pieces and a set of American songs, with Rakes and Schnack as accompanists.
The School of Music is a unit of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. For more information or special accommodations to attend, contact the school of 319-335-1603.
