Leaders at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center have announced recipients of the first round of the 2012 American Cancer Society seed grant awards.

Arlene Drack, associate professor of pediatric ophthalmology and ophthalmic genetics in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, has been granted a $100,000 RPB Physician-Scientist Award by Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB).

A student must have a minimum 4.0 grade point average in all academic subjects for the preceding two semesters, with a total of at least 12 semester hours of credit during that period, to qualify.

Iowa Writers' Workshop alumnus Nathan Englander is the winner of the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. The 25,000 euro prize is one of the richest and most prestigious prizes for short story writing. Another of the finalists was International Writing Program alumnus Etgar Keret.
