The University of Iowa has announced the search committee for the next vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

UI President Barbara Wilson and Executive Vice President and Provost Kevin Kregel in December named Matthew Howard, chair and department executive officer of the Department of Neurosurgery, and Edith Parker, dean of the College of Public Health, as co-chairs of the search committee to replace Brooks Jackson.

Joining Howard and Parker on the search committee will be:

• Alexander Bassuk, professor of pediatrics-general neurology and chair, Stead Family Children’s Hospital Department of Pediatrics
• Sherry Bates, president pro tem, Board of Regents, State of Iowa
• Mark Braun, executive director, Board of Regents, State of Iowa, ex-officio member
• Keith Carter, professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences and chair and head of the Department of Ophthalmology
• Joseph Clamon, associate vice president for legal affairs, UI Health Care
• Lyndsay Harshman, associate professor of pediatrics-nephrology, dialysis and transplantation
• Jackie Kleppe, director of outreach and engagement, UI Health Care Marketing and Communications; and Staff Council president
• Benjamin Linden, third-year medical student in the Carver College of Medicine and Graduate and Professional Student Government representative
• Peter Matthes, vice president for external relations and senior advisor to the president
• Cheryl Reardon, chief human resources officer and associate vice president, ex-officio member
• Marta Van Beek, C. William Hanke Professor of Dermatology and executive medical director of UI Hospitals & Clinics’ main campus ambulatory clinics

The search firm Spencer Stuart has been selected to assist with the process.

The new VPMA and dean of the Carver College of Medicine will replace Brooks Jackson, who announced in February 2022 that he will return to faculty to focus on his research once his successor begins.

An initial search paused in October after the candidate who was offered the position declined due to family obligations. Wilson and Kregel then spent eight weeks reevaluating the search and meeting with campus stakeholders before resuming the search in December.

A national search for the next CEO of UI Hospitals & Clinics will begin after the new VPMA and dean has started. Former CEO Suresh Gunasekaran left at the end of February 2022 to become the new leader of the University of California San Francisco Academic Health System.
