On Dec. 15—18, about 1,800 University of Iowa students will receive their degrees during in-person and livestreamed commencement ceremonies, beginning with the College of Education’s undergraduate and Teacher Education Program recognition on Dec. 15 and concluding with the College of Engineering undergraduate ceremony on Dec. 18.

Thursday, Dec. 15
College of Education
Undergraduate Commencement and Teacher Education Program Recognition Ceremony
4 p.m. CST
Hancher Auditorium
Ceremony for bachelor of arts graduates majoring in elementary education, art education, English education, mathematics Education, music education, science education, social studies education, or world language education, or in Educational Studies and Human Relations (ESHR), the College of Education's non-licensure major. Graduates will also be recognized for Teacher Education Program completion and recommendation for state licensure.
Dean Dan Clay will give the welcome, and Clay and UI President Barbara Wilson will confer degrees.
Mary Mascher (BA ’75, MA ’82), state representative in the Iowa House of Representatives, 1995—2023, will be the keynote speaker. Mitchell Kelly, clinical professor of educational psychology and director of the Office of Graduate Teaching Excellence, will be the faculty speaker. Makayla Smith, of Davenport, Iowa, who is completing the elementary education program, will be the student speaker. Smith will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Education.
Mark McDermott, associate dean for teacher education and student services, will recognize those who completed the Teacher Education Program as well as those who completed the Educational Studies and Human Relations (ESHR) program, and College of Education program coordinators will individually recognize graduating students.

President Barbara Wilson, along with Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education and Dean of the University College Tanya Uden-Holman, will deliver messages to students. Brian Lai, associate professor and chair of the Department of Political Science, will be the faculty speaker. Fall 2022 University College graduates Sharun Bell, from North Liberty, Iowa, and Daniel Garcia, from Plainfield, Illinois, will be the student speakers.
University College graduates can also be recognized in an in-person ceremony along with graduates from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Dean Harriet Nembhard and President Barbara Wilson will deliver messages to students. Graduate Jared Parr, of Iowa City, Iowa, will be the student speaker. Nancy Dunkel, member of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, will participate in the ceremony.
Carver-Hawkeye Arena parking note
Due to construction, traffic congestion around Carver-Hawkeye Arena is expected during commencement, so please allow extra time for your travel and parking.
Free parking for commencement at Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be available in these locations:
- Parking will be available on a first-come first-served basis within walking distance at Parking Lots 40, 33 (Dental Visitor), 43 (Kinnick), 65 (Finkbine), and 75 (Arena Commuter).
- Guests with disabilities who have a state issued ADA parking placard or license plate will be permitted to use Parking Lot 46, adjacent to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. From Parking Lot 46, guests should enter through the west doors.
- Please Note: Accessible parking in Lot 46 is limited to a first-come first-served basis. Once full, there will be no drop-offs in Lot 46. Overflow accessible parking can be found in Lot 40.
