Editor’s note: The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approved the proposed tuition increase for the 2022-23 academic year at its July 27, 2022, meeting.
At its June 20 meeting, the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, will consider the first reading of a proposal to increase resident and nonresident undergraduate tuition at the University of Iowa by $355 for the 2022-23 academic year. An increase of $443 is proposed for graduate resident and nonresident tuition.
A second reading and vote on the tuition increase proposal is scheduled for the board’s July 27 meeting. If approved, the changes will take effect at the start of the fall 2022 semester for all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
In addition to helping address inflationary costs, the 4.25% resident tuition rate increase will be used to build upon existing initiatives focused on improving student outcomes, as outlined in the university’s new Strategic Plan for 2022 to 2027.
“Our new strategic plan emphasizes our commitment to providing meaningful student experiences that help students stay engaged and graduate on time,” says Kevin Kregel, executive vice president and provost and co-chair of the Strategy Team that oversaw development of the strategic plan. “This tuition increase will support initiatives that have a direct impact on retention and graduation.”
Some colleges have proposed either keeping their tuition rates flat or have proposed slightly higher increases for specific programs based on cost.
No tuition rate increase is proposed for the Carver College of Medicine’s MD, Doctor of Physical Therapy, and Master of Science in Athletic Training programs or the College of Pharmacy’s PharmD program. The Tippie College of Business proposed a slightly higher rate change, as did the College of Nursing. The College of Law and the Carver College of Medicine’s Physician Assistant and Master of Clinical Nutrition programs are asking for increases of less than 4.25%.
Mandatory student fees are proposed to increase by $56. The extra funds would be used to bolster student health services— including hiring additional mental health staff—and address inflationary costs for IT and recreational services for students along with maintenance and improvements to the Iowa Memorial Union.

For the 2022-23 academic year, the Board of Regents requested an increase in state appropriation of $15 million for Iowa’s three public universities. The state, however, approved an increase of $5.5 million—a 1.1% boost—one year after holding funding flat. The UI would receive $2.4 million of the $5.5 million increase under a proposal the board will review at its June 20 meeting.
During the 2021-22 academic year, the Board of Regents increased tuition by $283 per semester for undergraduate residents and nonresidents and $353 per semester for graduate residents and nonresidents.
