On Dec. 16–19, nearly 1,800 University of Iowa students will receive their degrees in commencement ceremonies, beginning with the College of Education’s undergraduate and Teacher Education Program recognition on Dec. 16 and concluding with the College of Engineering’s undergraduate ceremony on Dec. 19.

Thursday, Dec. 16

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Undergraduate Commencement and Teacher Education Program Recognition Ceremony
4 p.m. CST
Hancher Auditorium

Ceremony for graduates majoring in elementary art, English, world language, mathematics, music, science, or social studies education. Graduates will also be recognized for Teacher Education Program completion and recommendation for state licensure as well as graduates with the Educational Studies and Human Relations (ESHR) major.

Dean Dan Clay will give the welcome, and Clay and UI President Barb Wilson will confer degrees. 

National Board Certified Teacher (’08 and ’18) Beth Hieronymus (BS ’94) will be the keynote speaker. Ted Neal, science education clinical professor, will be the faculty speaker, and Ethan Owens, a music and music education major from Runnells, Iowa, will be the student speaker. Owens will receive two bachelor’s degrees: a Bachelor of Arts from the College of Education and a Bachelor of Music from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Mark McDermott, associate dean for teacher education and student services, will recognize those who completed the Teacher Education Program, and College of Education program coordinators will present the diplomas.

Barla is earning a BBA in business analytics and information systems (BAIS) and a BA in computer science.

The guest speaker will be Caroline VanIngen-Dunn (BSBME ’83), director of the Center for Broadening Participation in STEM. Board of Regents member Nancy Dunkel will participate in the ceremony.
