A University of Iowa professor who studies the causes and effects of hypertension has been selected for an excellence award by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Alan “Kim” Johnson, F. Wendell Miller professor in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, will be awarded the 2021 Excellence Award for Hypertension Research by the AHA’s Council on Hypertension. The recognition ceremony will take place during the AHA’s Hypertension 2021 Scientific Sessions, Sept. 27–29, 2021.

Johnson’s research involves integrative physiology, neuroscience, and behavior. For several decades, he has investigated the role of the central nervous system in the control of body fluid and cardiovascular homeostasis

Johnson has affiliate faculty positions in the departments of Pharmacology and Neuroscience, and Health and Human Physiology.

The AHA award recognizes researchers who have had a major impact in the field of hypertension and whose research has contributed to improved treatment and greater understanding of high blood pressure.
