A former University of Iowa postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine, Antentor O. Hinton, Jr., worked with the biomedical journal publisher Cell Press to create a list of 1,000 Black scientists who are leaders in their fields and who can inspire the next generation to create diversity in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

The list includes 12 UI physicians, researchers, professors, and scientists:

• Ayotunde Dokun, Verna Funke Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center Chair, associate professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism
• E. Dale Abel, John B. Stokes III Chair in Diabetes Research; the François M. Abboud Chair in Internal Medicine; chair/department executive officer, Department of Internal Medicine; director of Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center; professor of Internal Medicine—Endocrinology and Metabolism; and professor of Biochemistry and Biomedical Engineering
• Francois M. Abboud, founding director of the Francois M. Abboud Cardiovascular Research Center (1974-2012); associate vice president for research; Edith King Pearson Chair of Cardiovascular Research; professor of Internal Medicine—Cardiovascular Medicine; and professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics
• Michael E. Wright, associate professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics
• Nicholas ZavaZava, professor of Immunology
• Vernat J. Exil, clinical professor of Pediatric Cardiology; medical director, Pediatric Heart Transplant & Heart Failure Program
