University of Iowa residence halls began welcoming students on Friday, Aug. 14, and as move-in picks up in earnest on Monday, Aug. 17, traffic will be heavy around campus. Faculty, staff, and local residents are encouraged to be patient and plan to take alternate routes.

To accommodate move-in, Clinton Street will be reduced to one-way northbound traffic from Saturday, Aug. 15, to Sunday, Aug. 23, beginning at the corner of Clinton and Market streets, continuing through the right-hand turn where Clinton becomes Church Street, and ending at the intersection of Church and Dubuque streets. On the west side of campus, families and students should plan to use Grand Avenue to get to the residence halls.

Students and families can find directions to residence halls here.

The move-in process has been altered this year to limit the potential exposure to COVID-19. In order to maintain social distancing, buildings will only have eight to 20 students move in per hour based on pre-selected time slots; students will be limited to two guests to help with moving; and volunteers will not be allowed to assist students in unloading their vehicles. Students and their move-in helpers will have one hour to unload their vehicle and then need to relocate the vehicle to a designated parking lot. Cambus will provide dedicated shuttles to and from parking lots and residence halls during move-in week.

The move-in schedule has been expanded to allow for the following changes.

  • Drop and go. Friday, Aug. 14, through Wednesday, Aug. 19
  • Early move-in. Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 16
  • New student move-in. Monday, Aug. 17, through Friday, Aug. 21
  • Returning student move-in. Friday, Aug. 21, through Sunday, Aug. 23

Students and guests must wear face coverings during the move-in process, and roommates are encouraged to coordinate and ensure that everyone is comfortable with multiple people in a room at the same time. Carts will be provided for students and their families, and will be disinfected between each use.

Upon check-in, students will receive their room key; On Iowa! check-in information; and a protective equipment (PE) kit, which includes two reusable cloth face coverings, two disposable masks, one face shield, and a small bottle of hand sanitizer.
