More than 5,400 University of Iowa students will be awarded degrees after the spring 2020 semester, and many graduates will participate in live-streamed virtual commencement ceremonies, which begin Thursday, May 14, with the College of Pharmacy and end on Friday, June 5, with the College of Dentistry. Other virtual ceremonies will take place between May 14 and May 23.

UI President Bruce Harreld, Executive Vice President and Provost Montse Fuentes, Iowa Board of Regents President Michael Richards, and Dean Donald Letendre will provide messages to students. Graduate Margie Peck will be the student speaker. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will be the guest speaker.

Undergraduate Commencement and Recognition of Teacher Education Program Completion
4 p.m. CDT


Ceremony for graduates majoring in elementary education; art education; English education; foreign language education; mathematics education; music education; science education; and social studies education. Graduates also will be recognized for Teacher Education Program completion and recommendation for state licensure.

Christopher S. Cooper, senior associate dean for medical education, will provide introductory remarks. Graduate Hillary O’Brien will be the student speaker. Manish Suneja, clinical professor of internal medicine, will provide the commencement address. Graduate Nouran Felo, 2020 recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, will administer the Hippocratic Oath.

Graduates in nuclear medicine technology, radiation sciences, medical laboratory sciences, and master of clinical anatomy will be recognized.

President Bruce Harreld and David Asprey, associate dean for medical education and professional programs, will deliver welcome messages to students, along with Executive Vice President and Provost Montse Fuentes and Iowa Board of Regents President Michael Richards. They keynote speaker will be Colin Derdeyn; Derdeyn is the Krabbenhoft Chair and DEO of the Department of Radiology, the director of the Iowa Institute of Biomedical Imaging, and professor of radiology and neurology. Tamia Ayoki-Davis, a senior radiation sciences student, will be the student speaker. Gabe Decker, assistant manager of diagnostic radiology, will provide the charge to students. President Harreld will confer degrees.
